Cosy Minimalism

The philosophy that less truly is more — removing unnecessary items to reveal the warmth and character that matters. It's about creating calm, clutter-free spaces that still feel genuinely welcoming, not cold or sparse.

Natural Materials

Working with natural wood, wool, linen, and other sustainable materials that age beautifully and add genuine texture to rooms. She collaborates with Irish furniture makers and textile artisans to source pieces that are both functional and timeless.

Ambient Lighting

Strategic use of candles, warm LED lighting, and layered light sources to combat the reality of long Irish evenings. The goal isn't just brightness — it's creating an atmosphere that feels inviting and restful when darkness falls outside.

Bedroom Design

Creating restful bedrooms through simplicity and intentional design. Síle's approach to bedroom spaces focuses on sleep quality — using muted tones, soft textiles, minimal visual clutter, and thoughtful lighting to promote genuine rest and wellbeing.

Colour & Texture

Muted, earthy palettes that create calm without feeling boring. Síle understands how to layer textures — soft furnishings, natural fabrics, wood grains — to add depth and warmth to minimalist interiors that might otherwise feel too sparse.

Writing & Content

At Gortenclare Limited, Síle leads content development on contemporary Irish interior design. She writes about practical design solutions, shares client stories, and educates homeowners on how to apply cosy minimalist principles to their own spaces.

The Story So Far

Síle's journey into interior design didn't start in a classroom — it started in 2010 when she renovated her family's Victorian cottage in County Cork. That project changed everything. She discovered firsthand how minimalist principles could enhance rather than diminish the coziness of an Irish home. That experience sparked a realisation: spaces didn't need to be cluttered to feel warm.

After completing her BA in Interior Architecture at Dublin Institute of Technology, she spent five years working with established Dublin design practices. Those years were essential — they gave her the technical grounding and professional discipline that separates thoughtful design from mere decluttering. But she knew she wanted something different. In 2018, she established her own consultancy, focusing exclusively on residential projects across the island of Ireland.

Her breakthrough came in 2019 when she was featured in the Irish Examiner for her innovative approach to bedroom design. The article highlighted something that's become central to her philosophy: how simplicity and comfort aren't opposing forces. By removing unnecessary items, you create space for the textures, warmth, and light that truly matter. Her clients reported significantly improved sleep quality. That resonated.

Since then, she's worked with over 200 homeowners across Ireland. Every project reinforces what she learned in that cottage — that minimalism, done right, makes homes feel more genuinely welcoming, not less. She regularly collaborates with Irish textile producers and sustainable furniture makers, and her work has been featured in Design Ireland magazine and various Irish home improvement publications.

What Drives the Work

"Minimalism shouldn't mean cold or sparse. It's about removing the things that don't matter so you can see and feel the things that do. A room with less in it can feel infinitely warmer if you've chosen every element with intention."

— Síle O'Donnell

Understanding Irish Living

Every project is grounded in the reality of how Irish people actually live — the dark evenings, the weather, the way families move through their homes. Design that ignores context doesn't work. It's not enough to apply a style; you've got to understand the life happening in the space.

Warmth Over Minimalism

If minimalism makes a room feel cold, it's failed. Síle's priority is always warmth — genuine, felt comfort. Minimalism is the tool, not the goal. That's why natural wood, soft textiles, and careful lighting are non-negotiable in every project.

Collaboration With Makers

She works with Irish textile producers, furniture makers, and artisans because locally-made pieces carry authenticity and quality that mass-produced items can't match. Supporting Irish craft is part of the design philosophy, not separate from it.

Sustainable by Default

Natural materials that age beautifully. Fewer items that last longer. Design that won't feel dated in five years. Sustainability isn't a checkbox — it's built into the approach because it aligns with minimalism itself.
